UltiMaker ABS (2.85 mm) — Tough, Heat-Ready, Shop-Floor Friendly

UltiMaker ABS is a production-grade acrylonitrile butadiene styrene engineered to minimize warping and deliver reliable interlayer adhesion, so your prototypes and short-run parts look sharp and hold up under pressure.

  • Tough & impact-resistant for functional parts
  • 🌡️ Heat capable — resists deformation in typical shop and in-vehicle conditions
  • 🧱 Low-warp formulation tuned for UltiMaker S-Series profiles
  • 🧩 Support-friendly — pairs great with UltiMaker Breakaway for clean overhangs

Great Use Cases

  • Functional prototypes that need to be handled, snapped, and tested
  • Jigs & fixtures near equipment where warmth or vibration is a factor
  • Snap-fit housings, brackets, clips where toughness trumps aesthetics
  • Automotive/interior test parts and fit-check models
  • Short-run end-use parts that benefit from easy post-processing (sanding, drilling, acetone bonding/smoothing when appropriate)

Pros & Cons

Why you’ll like it

  • Mechanical strength & toughness suitable for working parts
  • Better heat resistance than PLA and many PETG blends
  • Dialed-in Cura profiles reduce warping on S-Series printers
  • Finishing flexibility — sands, drills, and solvent-bonds well

Things to keep in mind

  • Can warp on large flat parts without a warm, well-shielded build area
  • Emits noticeable odour while printing; use good ventilation/air management
  • Not food-contact rated; prolonged UV exposure can embrittle parts
  • Surface finish is more “engineering-grade” than cosmetic without post-processing

Tech Specs (UltiMaker ABS, 2.85 mm)

Filament diameter 2.85 mm (±0.10 mm)
Net weight 750 g (≈107 m)
Heat Deflection Temp (0.455 MPa) ~86.6 °C
Vicat Softening Temp ~93.8 °C
Glass Transition (Tg) ~100–105 °C
Young’s Modulus (XY / YZ / Z) ~1962 / 1931 / 1699 MPa
Tensile Stress at Yield (XY / YZ) ~38 MPa / ~38 MPa
Specific Gravity ~1.10 g/cm³
Recommended supports UltiMaker Breakaway (primary); PVA usable in select cases
Compatible printers UltiMaker S-Series (S3, S5, S7), 3, 2+ Connect (single-material)

Tip: For large ABS parts, keep drafts out, use a warm build chamber/air manager, generous brim, and Cura’s ABS profile to further minimize warp. Breakaway support peels cleanly and preserves tight tolerances.

FAQ — click to expand

What’s the real-world heat capability?

UltiMaker’s printed ABS shows an HDT around the mid-80s °C at 0.455 MPa and a Tg ~100 °C. In practice, parts remain serviceable in warm environments where PLA would soften.

Does ABS still warp?

Any ABS can warp on large, flat geometries. UltiMaker’s formulation and Cura profiles reduce it, but enclosure/air management, a brim, and sane part orientation are your best friends.

What support material should I use?

UltiMaker Breakaway is the go-to with ABS for fast, clean removal and dimensionally accurate surfaces. PVA can be used for certain geometries, but Breakaway is generally preferred for ABS.

Is it food-safe or UV-stable?

No. It isn’t intended for food contact, and prolonged UV exposure can degrade properties. For outdoor use, consider coatings or alternative materials.

What nozzle and cores?

Use AA print cores (e.g., 0.4 mm) with the built-in ABS profiles in UltiMaker Cura. Heated bed and draft shielding recommended.

Post-processing tips?

ABS sands and drills well. For bonding or surface smoothing, appropriate acetone-based methods can be used with proper safety and ventilation.
